The Right to Read Film Screening and Conversation

Join Hill Learning Center for a complimentary screening of The Right to Read documentary at the historic Hayti Heritage Center. The event features a screening of the award-winning documentary by executive producer LeVar Burton, The Right to Read. This film shares the stories of an NAACP activist, a teacher, and two American families who fight to provide our youngest generation with the most foundational indicator of life-long success: the ability to read. Following the screening, a panel of education and community advocates will discuss this film’s message. The panel will be moderated by Rupen Fofaria of EdNC and will feature Laura Stewart of 95 Percent Group, Jaalil Hart of KIPP NC, and Durham Public Schools Educator Dawn McClendon.

On November 7, 2023, Read Write Spell will host our biennial Rise & Read Breakfast fundraiser. This year's keynote speaker is Emily Hanford. Emily Hanford is an award-winning journalist who helped spark a national movement to bring the science of reading to schools with her groundbreaking podcast episode, Hard Words: Why Aren’t Our Kids Being Taught to Read? Emily has traveled the country speaking with educators, caregivers and families, and other stakeholders about literacy instruction, and she will share some of those insights with us.

It is important to give back to the community, and there is no greater investment than providing a child with a foundation for success in education. Please join us for Rise & Read 2023 on Tuesday, November 7 at 8 a.m. to help support the work of Read Write Spell in our community.

Grounding Multilingual Learners’ Reading Instruction in Evidence

Join us on January 23rd at 7:00PM EST for a virtual session with Dr. Antonio Fierro, Vice President of Professional Learning and Academics, 95 Percent Group and Dr. Maria Coady, Goodnight Distinguished Professor in Educational Equity and Professor of Multilingual Education at NC State University. The session will explain how current research informs reading instruction for Multilingual Learners. Participants will learn actionable strategies supported by reading science.

Annual Day of Dyslexia, a Structured Literacy Symposium

IDA NC will host Elsa Cárdenas-Hagan for the annual Day of Dyslexia, a Structured Literacy Symposium. Elsa Cárdenas-Hagan is a bilingual speech and language pathologist, dyslexia therapist, certified academic language therapist and author of the book, Literacy Foundations for English Language Learners. In addition, Dr. Cardenas-Hagan is the Chairperson of the National Joint Committee on Learning Disabilities and is the Past Vice-Chairperson of the International Dyslexia Association, and is a recipient of the Margaret Byrd Rawson Lifetime Achievement Award by the IDA. Join us on February 12, 2024 from 8:30-1:30 at the Hill Learning Center in Durham. Participants may also choose to attend virtually at the Fletcher School in Charlotte for networking opportunities or attend virtually from home.
