Mebane Early Literacy Summit

The Mebane Early Literacy Summit that will take place on Saturday, February 1, 2025 from 8:30-2:00 in the Cone Center of UNC Charlotte. This year's theme is "Collective Action: Research-Based Literacy Practices in Schools, Homes, and Communities." Session content will be aligned with the science of reading and designed for classroom teachers, families, and literacy leaders in schools and the community. Additionally, participants can earn Continuing Education Credits (CEUs) for teacher licensure. Our Keynote Speaker this year is local author, Mike Deeney, of the Avery and Masa Literacy Foundation. Mike leads the Foundation and is Creator-Author of the Avery and Masa® Literacy Platform. Mike’s background as an elementary educator, youth mentor, writer, and changemaker has prepared him to build a strong foundation for the organization. Mike has developed and executed a successful three-year Title 1 school literacy program resulting in an dynamic increase in 3rd grade literacy scores.

Meet Me Where I Am: Supporting Learners Across Environments: Executive Functions at school, on the field, and at home. As Key Learning Center's signature dyslexia education event, this symposium includes a keynote address, lunch, a choice of three 60-minute breakout sessions, and CEU credit. Speakers include faculty from the KLC and Carolina Day and professionals from the field of dyslexia/OGA Fellows, and related fields. This well-attended annual event brings topics that are current, relevant, and meaningful to parents, teachers, and other professionals.

Join us as we read and discuss The Science of Reading: Defining Guide from The Reading League. This free resource is available for download from the national organization’s webpage. Participants will read the text then join a virtually facilitated discussion with TRL-NC board members Sean Lindsey and Courtney Morgan. This event is great for those who are getting started on their SoR journey or who want to refresh their understanding.
