The Science of Reading has transformed instruction across classrooms—but does it fully serve multilingual learners? Join us for an engaging session with Courtney Morgan, co-author of the Language Magazine article “Reimagine the Science of Reading Through a Multilingual Lens”. Together, we’ll explore how to evaluate your current SoR-aligned instruction and ensure it meets the needs of students who bring linguistic and cultural assets into the classroom. Courtney will walk educators through: - The limitations of monolingual-centric research in today’s diverse classrooms - What to look for or adjust in your current instruction to better serve multilingual learners - Actionable strategies to honor and elevate the strengths of MLs - Questions you can use to self-assess programming and implementation Whether you’re a classroom teacher, district leader, or coach, this conversation will stretch your thinking and sharpen your practice.
Left Behind: The Film explores the national reading crisis and its devastating impact on children who are not given access to evidence-based reading instruction. The documentary sheds light on systemic inequities, the human cost of low literacy rates, and the urgent need to align teaching practices with the science of reading. We encourage you to watch the global screening of Left Behind: The Film between October 24 and November 1 at leftbehindthefilm.com, and then join us for a virtual discussion. Together, we’ll unpack the film’s key messages, reflect on what it reveals about reading instruction in North Carolina, and discuss how we can collectively change outcomes for students—especially those most often left behind. This is an opportunity to engage with educators, advocates, and literacy leaders who share a commitment to ensuring every child learns to read.
